Compliance Checklist
- ›Implement a pre-publication fact-check protocol requiring verification against official Bukit Aman CID press releases or statements before publishing crime-related content.
- ›Conduct biannual compliance training for all Malaysia-based communications staff on Section 211 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and CID’s media engagement principles.
- ›Prohibit republication or translation of unverified foreign media reports on Malaysian criminal investigations — especially regarding suspects, evidence, or investigative methods.
English Summary
Malaysia's Bukit Aman CID Director emphasized that media practitioners must report crime-related information accurately, responsibly, and in coordination with law enforcement—especially amid rising digital, cross-border, and organized crimes. Key compliance expectations include: using factual language, avoiding sensationalism or premature disclosure, and timing publications to avoid compromising investigations. While no new regulation was issued, this statement reinforces existing obligations under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Penal Code (e.g., Section 505 on statements conducing to public mischief), and police media protocols. Foreign businesses operating media channels, PR agencies, or digital platforms in Malaysia must ensure editorial policies align with these standards. Non-compliance may trigger police inquiries, content takedowns, or reputational liability. No deadline is specified, but adherence is expected immediately as part of ongoing operational compliance.
